The Closet Moderate: January 2012

Friday, January 13, 2012

One of my goals when we started this blog was to give credit where credit's due, even when a good idea comes from someone who I otherwise almost always disagree with. When Obama was elected, I (perhaps alone among my fellow bloggards) was disappointed, but there were two things I hoped he might accomplish that I would support: expanding rail infrastructure and normalizing relations with Cuba. Unfortunately, he attempted the former in the worst way possible (high-speed rail from Milwaukee to Madison?) and the latter he completely failed to accomplish.

But now comes a new idea: merging redundant government agencies. Is it a cynical ploy to look once more like the common-sense moderate he pretended to be in 2008? Sure, but so what! It's a good idea, one that private companies do all the time but governments do almost never. It's a rational idea that sounds reasonable coming from a Republican or a Democrat and makes plenty of sense to the average American.

Of course, it will never happen.
