Team of Rivals Cont'd.

I was going to post about the somewhat ill-considered love for the "team of rivals" concept, but it turns out Steven Teles @ JHU has already covered that ground. I don't have a doctorate, he does, read it.

Also, it helps put Mike Allen's report that the Obama team is exasperated with the Clinton drama into context.

I couldn't disagree more. Firstly, Dr. Goodwin to the contrary, Lincoln was neither the first nor the last President to have major politicians in his cabinet. It always used to be that way, and Presidents used to get real advice from them. Nowadays, they have their chiefs of staff, and their National Security Committees, and their speechwriters, but the cabinet was the original group intended under the Constitution to give advice to the President. Sort of like the Privy Council in England. For those jobs, you need savvy pols, not nerdy wonks who already agree with you in every way.

And the idea that they would run wild is equally wrong. All cabinet officers serve at the President's pleasure. If Obama didn't like what Hillary was doing, he could kick her to the curb, just like Lincoln did with Simon Cameron.

I don't disagree with you. I'm just saying that selecting Hillary carries with it the risk of serious political costs to Obama that are in no way related to her ability to do the job.

Obviously, that makes dismissing her a bit of a problem.
